Strange, isn´t it?

[Written by jose|self|14.02.06]

When I checked the tagcloud for this site a few moments ago, I found something really strange… I took a screen capture, which was a good idea: when I reloaded the screen, everything was like always again… you may see the image for yourself; the only interpretation I can make is that, somehow, the computer displayed some tags from my own mind!… or heart ;)

The number of the rose

In “Petals Around the Rose” there is always one correct answer. The problem is how we define the problem.

Look at the image below:

Now, my question is the following: How many petals are around the rose? Read the rest of this article »

Site Updates

[Written by jose|general, self|11.02.06]

Last Updated 26.09.07

I would like to bring to your attention two features that I have recently added to this site:

  • I have grouped all the resources for browsing through the articles in a single page, archives. The methods for browsing are self-explanatory, and I hope this will provide for more consistent and effective browsing.
  • I have also added a Toplinks section. It is based on the aadvark topsites php, adapted so that it matches the rest of the site (albeit as a “topsites” page it stands on its own). If you have a site or blog that you want to announce, you can easily do so, and as soon as it gets accepted (I will review every submission to avoid spam), it will appear in the listings (typically within a couple hours from submitting). Right now the available categories are Arts&Crafts, Curiosities, Design, Enterntainment, Personal and Technology, accordingly to the usual contents of the articles in the site. Once listed, the sites will be ranked on a weekly basis. Also, if you want you can send some information on your site and I will be glad to introduce it in an article!
  • Update 13.02.06 I changed the settings so that new sites get listed right after they´re registered.
Update 26.09.07 I decided to delete the Toplinks Section since it was receiving an enormous amount of spam, which actually menaced to kill the site´s bandwith. However, I´ll keep on writing articles on featured sites, as I wrote above.

    Lego of choice: Doraemon

Doraemon, the cosmic cat, must be one of the cutest japanese cartoon characters ever, and my personal favourite: he´s always smiling (unlike Kitty, which “speaks from her heart” and therefore has no mouth: duh!), and he always has some cool gadget to amuse Nobita (he´s got a magic four-dimensional pocket!!). This said, I was really pleased when I learned that someone had made a “real-size” Doraemon out of lego blocks. (Another proof that anything can be replicated with Lego blocks: it´s just a matter of patience and blocks -and the money to buy them). Read the rest of this article »

    Girls and Video Games

    [Written by carlos|sound, image|10.02.06]

Oh Women, that beautiful 50% of the population which handle more than 50% of the small consumer´s money! Let´s go over a few quick facts related to girls and interactive computing:

    1. A sane woman will never enter a Micro, Game, Microplay -or whatever they are called. Have you payed attention to those places? They are full of nerds, have enormous cardboard figures of a half naked Lara Croft on display -or worse: featuring a six-feet-high Mario!… If they were searching for ways to repel girls, they really Read the rest of this article »

    Announcement

    [Written by jose|general, self|09.02.06]

I am glad to announce that from tomorrow on this site will feature translations of articles written by author Carlos Bellido. Here is a little about him:

Carlos holds a MS in Computer Science by the University of Zaragoza. He´s currently engaged in investigation projects at the University of Santiago de Compostela, and writes articles related to Computer Game Development in his own blog, The long Tomorrow (in spanish). Most of these articles are of a technical nature; however, from time to time he also writes on his reflections about gaming and games. We will periodically feature translations of these articles.

Look forward to Carlos´ articles, starting with “Girls and video games”.

    Memoirs of an aching soul

    [Written by ángel|sound|08.02.06]

The mexican band “Maná” is one of the latin bands with more worldwide repercussion; that´s a fact. Yesterday I was listening to Maná’s “MTV Unplugged”, an album that offers an interesting song compilation, in an excellent acoustic version. But beyond its undeniable musical quality I will enhance a circumstance that never stops to amaze me in every album they bring up: The main characters of Maná’s songs Read the rest of this article »

    VirtualStapler

    Ka-chunk! click! Ka-chunk!
    No sound satisfies me more
    Than staplers at work!

“Vanitas vanitatis, et omnia staplers”: VirtualStapler is a little lovely site which covers everything you ever wanted to know about staplers, including some aspects that you probably never thought of. The site´s main attraction is the interactive piece featured on the front page, which brings attention to an underrated yet often indispensable action, and will relieve many compulsive staplers out of the office. Several virtual staplers are included for a staple-of-the-art recreation, and many others are covered in a comprehensible gallery. Even more, you can download several stapler-themed computer desktops, and I highly recommend reading the Stapler poetry, from where I took the haiku above.

All in all, a must- visit! :D

Tshirt Folding ex Machina: The FlipFold

    [Written by jose|general|05.02.06]

    http://www.flipfold.com/

Use FlipFOLD for folding your pants, shorts, skirts…even towels and sheets!

Some days ago I wrote about an easy technique to fold Tshirts by hand. I have been using it since then with good results, though the technique renders irregular results: some shirts look better folded than others, some of them are better centered…

Here´s when a little bit of industrial revolution comes in handy: The FlipFold (yet another inspired name) is a very simple machine designed to Read the rest of this article »

    Sliding Blocks Galore!

    [Written by jose|image|04.02.06]

    http://www.johnrausch.com/SlidingBlockPuzzles/Default.htm

When I was little I had a small keychain sliding block puzzle featuring The Hulk. I remember very well the original image with all the pieces in place. I still remember my pretentious ideals (I can undo and solve it again, mwa ha ha!), and I can´t forget how they were shattered to pieces after endless vain attempts to bring back The Hulk to shape, which was finally left alone in the thick mist of oblivion, condemned to suffer an amorphous state of eternal, merciless, evergrowing entropy… Read the rest of this article »

I Q. Do you?: The Qchord

    [Written by jose|sound|03.02.06]

    http://www.suzukimusic.com/qchord/

Anyone, musician or not, can instantly sound like a pro at the touch of a button. You can’t make a mistake!

A few days ago I was searching for synthesizers on ebay when I found an auction for something called “omnichord” (click here to see an auction for a similar item). After some research I found that the Suzuki Omnichord was actually a kind of “automatic music maker”. First released in 1981, it featured several rows of keys, able to play melodies or “autochords” (a chord was obtained by playing a single key). Even more, it had a touchplate that allowed you to Read the rest of this article »

    Plato of the day

    Music for Valentine´s Day

    [Written by ángel|sound|01.02.06]

A new Valentine’s Day is coming soon. If you are the kind of people who feel “obliged” to make some gifts but you don´t like it so much, then you are my kind. What do we do in those cases? Well, we sit and wait for an inspiration which often brings the form of a perfume or music. However, since you won’t be giving perfumes during all your life, music is the option which offers more possibilities. It has to be romantic, of course, because if your couple is enraptured by any theme of the album, she/he will probably turn it into “the couple song” (for some months, at least).
