[Written by jose|self, sound, image|16.11.07]

http://www.glest.org/

After some time and quite some expectation, a new version has been released that includes the single most awaited feature in the history of the game: Multiplayer!

At this point the multiplayer feature is reduced to the bare bones, but it works. We are hoping on the community to help us test it :)

The minitank!

[Written by jose|image|23.09.07]

http://aqua.kyucon.com/miniaqua.html

The site above features a very nice collection of mini-aquariums, along with code for you to include them in your own website or blog, may you want to. I tested a miniaqua in nan´s sidebar for a few days, and after “installing” it my browser updated (automatically) the Shockwave player. Then the aquarium ran perfectly, though a friend told me today that he had been unable to open the site, so be careful if you decide to use it. By the way, there´s another version of the aquarium available from the same site, though it´s not as mini :P

Now, for some real-ly small fishtanks, you may like to take a look at this selection.

Dumber&Dumber Vs…

[Written by ángel|sound, image|21.09.07]

“What do the cruellest criminals do when they are all together?” This looks like the beginning of a joke, but still isn´t… Perhaps if I say “Simon West’s Con Air”, you will guess what the joke is. Wow! What a horrible film (in my opinion)! More than a blockbuster it seems a “blockbastard”! -Sorry for the pun.

Ok. Let’s start again. I am not going to talk about the ridiculous script, the non-existent sense of measure, the extremely confuse action scenes, or the inappropriate performances. I think that something better could Read the rest of this article »

On crafting Universes

[Written by jose|image|28.09.06]

http://www.solarvoyager.com/tutorials.asp

(…)it is useful for beginners and pros alike to see how other artists achieve certain results. These tutorials are only intended to be guides as you work through new processes and challenges. Upon these building blocks, you must add experimentation and a great deal of practice(…)

Solar Voyager hosts what in my opinion is the net´s best collection of tutorials on crafting realistic space scenes by means of 2D techniques. Most of them are focused on different approaches to rendering planets of all sorts, but fortunately there are several other articles which cover a broad field of subjects, from nebulae to asteroids to truly impressive star fields. As you´ll soon realize, following the articles will be a lot easier if you have Photoshop, since that´s the tool of choice in most of them; however, I´m sure that there´s no effect that you can´t achieve by using other programs, so that shouldn´t be a problem.

Besides from the tutorials, you should pay some to time to visit the rest of Solar Voyager, which covers all branches of space art: you´ll surely be surprised by the quantity and quality of many of the works shown!

The UFO camera

[Written by jose|image|18.07.06]

http://www.casadopinhole.net/ovni_eng.htm

This new version of the Ovnipan adds several new features: a improved transport system makes the camera even more pleasurable to use(…) The round design has been retained without changes, harmonizing perfectly with the panoramic function of the camera.

The ovnipan is a panoramic pinhole c the best looking panoramic pinhole camera I have seen so far. It surely looks like a UFO, or a futuristic house; in any case, the design is beautiful in its simplicity and, even better, it works! Here you can find several examples of images taken with the camera, a collection of surreal, yet vivid panoramas. The designers have also devised a special attachment, a rubber band which works as a “second-level” shutter, thus allowing the photographer to make collages. Great!

Hitting the city

[Written by ángel|sound, image|12.07.06]

A gang of highly professional thieves is committing a series of robberies… An assassin performs his very own nightly tour de force… Two anti-vice detectives pursue the typical delinquent. While looking forward to seeing on screen Miami Vice´s cinematographic version, both “Heat” and “Collateral” offer us a characteristic mark of Michael Mann´s work as a director, which is not in the detective stories but in his way of portraying the city. In fact, these two movies Read the rest of this article »

Cars: Afterthoughts

[Written by jose|sound, image|10.07.06]

http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/cars/

Lightning McQueen, a hotshot rookie race car driven to succeed, discovers that life is about the journey, not the finish line, when he finds himself (…) in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs.

For the sake of honesty, I´ll say that I went to see Cars almost forced by a friend. Though I usually love animation films, the way the cars are portrayed looked somehow too bland, too gentle, so to say, and I feared that the whole would share that same spirit.

In fact, while perhaps mild, Cars is nevertheless a good movie. Read the rest of this article »

The origami shirt is one of my favourite models: it is easy to make, and looks great! In the site above you will find step-by-step instructions to fold it, with pictures. The hawaian look is optional, of course: I for instance made this soccer-themed shirt :)

Disguised pets

[Written by jose|image|03.07.06]

http://www.josezanni.com/mascotasdisfrazadas/index.php?menu=inicio&pais=en

My good friend José Zanni has opened a new site, Disguised pets. My cat (in the small picture) was the first pet to be featured, and little by little a gallery is being made with pictures of pets from all over the world. The site is still very young and was originally made in spanish, so some paragraphs are still waiting to be translated in the english part; in case there are any doubts, I´ll translate below the rules for sending pictures, as explained in the “send us your pet” page:

1.Send the picture in JPEG format, along with your name, location and a short description.
2.The pictures sent musn´t exceed 1MB.
3.There´s no need to send a thumbnail, they do it for you.
4.All the pictures sent will be reviewed; please send you best picture only ;)

The Optimus keyboard

[Written by jose|general, image|26.06.06]

Every key of the Optimus keyboard is a stand-alone display showing exactly what it is controlling at this very moment.

Designed by russian Levedeb Studio, the Optimus Keyboard will make use of cutting edge technology to redefine the peripheral´s functionality.

As we know, a computer keyboard is bound to whatever was printed on the keys when manufactured. This is something we usually don´t pay much attention to, unless we Read the rest of this article »

Don´t be tarugo- throw your SatuGO!

[Written by jose|image|23.06.06]

http://www.satugo.com/

Simply throw SatuGO into the motive to catch the moment, where it hits you get a picture, or take air photos by activating the timer before throwing (it)(…) SatuGO is based on a simple wish to be able to take more fun and edgy pictures where the photographer is part of the action.

Camera tossing is a technique for taking pictures by throwing a camera in mid- air; it is fun and quite addictive, but it can be quite risky too, especially for newcomers: -”I failed to catch the camera, and it almost broke!”, a reader told me yesterday. Even though there´s many of us who have at least one old digital camera that we can afford to break, not every cheapo webcam has a built-in timer, which limits very much the scope of results you can obtain. In this way, I certainly can´t but Read the rest of this article »

Throw the camera!

[Written by jose|image|19.06.06]

http://cameratoss.blogspot.com/

http://www.flickr.com/groups/cameratoss/

For we are the reckless folks on flickr that enjoy the abstract, chance, generative, physical photography that results from throwing our cameras into the air

The photography technique known as camera tossing can be described in three words: click, throw, catch (or not). The details of course depend on the type of camera you use, but that´s all that is needed. The key is to adjust the exposure time wisely, and throw the camera in a certain way so as to Read the rest of this article »

Zinc Mecha

[Written by jose|general, image|15.06.06]

http://www.zincpanic.com/

Japanese toy design is one of the last bastions of optimism in our increasingly luddite world-view. (…) we endeavor to be the most complete, thorough and accurate resource regarding anything related to Japanese toys

If you like japanese robots, you MUST visit Zinc Panic. This site features a huge collection of articles on japanese robot characters and toys of every kind you could think about. You say Mazinger? they have it. Evangelion? sure! Gundam? of course! You´ll probably have to fight the cool-looking, pixel-artsy, kinda-esotheric interface, but getting lost in the site is actually part of the experience, as the designers explain in the… er, helpful help section:

there is no end point, no goal to reach, within Zinc Panic.

All said and done: After quite some time exploring the site at my leisure, I recognize the great double effort made to build up a comprehensive database and a website with personality. I assure you, browsing through Zinc Panic will be a unique and rewarding experience. Dorka Dorka Radar Radar!! :D

ps. Through Zinc Panic I got to Fewture. Mazinger, Aphrodite and Garada will never be the same…
